Wall Art in Downtown La Jolla

La Jolla is a walking around kind of town because it is nearly impossible to find a parking spot and once you do it will likely take some time to get to your destination.

Which is nice.

Because there are little surprises tucked between buildings if you just keep your eyes open.

I did a double take when I saw this adult-size sculpture.

And laughed when I read the sign.

And then I spotted an eye chart (or so it seemed from a block away).

When I was little I really HATED going to the dentist.

And I imagine they weren't too thrilled to see me either.

One time the dentist offered my Mom a pill (for me to take ahead of time in order to relax before I got a cavity filled).

Yowza. That seems a bit creepy, doesn't it?

Anyway, as an adult I enjoy the dentist office. Dr. Miyashiro is a total perfectionist. I know my smile and gums are in good hands.

Plus walking into her office in La Jolla is like visiting a spa. 

Because she practices the art of Ikebana:

The Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is more than simply putting flowers in a container. It is a disciplined art form in which the arrangement is a living thing where nature and humanity are brought together. It is steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature.

Ikebana is an art, in the same sense that painting and sculpture are arts. It has a recorded history; it is backed up by articulate theories; and it is concerned with creativity. In Japan, flower arrangements are used as decorations on a level with paintings and other art objects.

Her receptionist told me that Dr. M brings in new 'art' every week. 

The arrangements are breathtaking.

Much more relaxing than any pill.

Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla

Shore Thing takes place every Thursday (through August 28th), from 5-8 pm and includes free admission to the museum,  guided tours, music and an opportunity to purchase cocktails and pizza.

We had a very interesting guide and the museum itself is attractive (op art is especially fun).

But I am still wondering about the series of four paintings that featured a man with his hand in a shoe splattered with sweat or tear drops? And why are the shoes not on his feet?

While we meandered around the art and tried to figure it out, I couldn't help drifting to the windows and outdoor balcony because it is the view from the museum that is breath-taking.

And I didn't need to interpret what I was looking at.

…..it is all just THERE.

Cake Club Competition

This afternoon we stumbled upon San Diego's Cake Club Competition held at the La Jolla Village Square Mall.

The show benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charity - so guess who showed up with his big red clown feet?

Wrapping up 2012
