This past Sunday we hosted a barbeque. The guests ranged from early 20’s to mid 70’s, so naturally we planned activities.
A sparkly pink hula hoop was brought out early.
After indulging in jalapeno poppers, burgers and salads, it was time for piñata bashing.
A blindfold, a swing of the bat and then a race to gather up the goodies.
Which included Super Lotto cards.
And the chance to be a millionaire!
Piñata 101
Decide on a theme or a shape. We went with a beer bottle.
Started with a PVC pipe through an upside down plastic plant container. Then built it up with crumpled paper. Covered the whole thing with plastic.

Next came the papier-mâché process. In a large bowl, mixed all-purpose flour and enough water to make a soupy paste. Then dunked pieces of newspaper and slapped them on the bottle.
Took it outside to dry in the sun.
Added a second layer of papier-mâché.
Spray painted the outside and began the decorating process. Brown crepe paper (pre-cut width-wise) was glued to the bottle (overlapping each row) from bottom to top.
A bottle cap (aluminum foil on a small paper plate) was glued on top.
Then a computer-generated beer label was attached. Goodie bags were shoved inside along with strategically taped streamers that would ‘explode’.
A spray painted paper plate and some tape sealed up the bottom.

Due to the structural integrity, one good whack was able to break open the paper plate and release the goodies while leaving the rest of the piñata in perfect shape for photo ops and possible re-use.
Which is highly likely since no one scratched off a winning lotto number!
Love this idea! I'm putting a birthday party together for my husband and he only likes Modelo Especial in the bottles. This helps out a lot on how to shape the bottle! Thanks so much.
